Part of the charm of exploring Ella, while staying at The Secret Ella is getting a chance to take part in local events in Ella that offer an insight into the island’s rich heritage.
A perfect way to soak up some local culture would be to visit the weekly town fair in Ella held every Wednesday. Colourful processions known as “peraheras” also take place here with the Dova Temple Perehara in May and the Kumbal Perehara in June providing visitors a chance to join Buddhist devotees in witnessing these annual events.
Celebrated throughout the island, the Sinhala and Tamil New Year Festival takes place every April and is marked by family get-togethers, the preparation of special traditional New Year treats and the hosting of a number of fun games and competitions that the entire community takes part in. Guests staying at The Secret Ella can also witness the Halpewatte Estate Kovil Ceremony in August, which has great meaning to Hindu devotees in the region.
